Fourth of July Social

July 4, 2008

Our Chapter Social for the month of July was a damp 4th of July celebration at the home of Bill & Karen Marshall in Manassas, Va.

Despite the on-again / off-again rain showers, a good number of members turned out to enjoy the evening. Appetizers and desserts graciously provided by our guests were set up inside and the weather cleared in time to enjoy dinner outdoors. Butch Smith and Keith Kallapos were pressed into duty as grill cooks preparing the chicken and hotdogs and dinner was completed before the drizzle began again just as night was falling.

The City of Manassas celebrates the 4th of July with their Celebrate America event held in the old town section a few blocks away. The conclusion of this event is billed as the largest firework display in the Northern Virginia area. We are fortunate to have a wonderful view of the fireworks from our front yard.

While the show began under light sprinkles, we were soon huddled on the front porch, sheltered under umbrellas and peering out windows to watch the sky light up with colorful explosions. The show was indeed spectacular with the highlight being “happy face” fireworks filling the night sky. When the City ended their show, the rain was coming down in earnest and we were forced to forgo passing out the adult-sized sparklers that were so popular at last year’s event. Not to worry as plans are being made to incorporate the sparklers with the ‘Ool Party events.
