SUMMARY:British Car Week
DESCRIPTION:A time set aside nationwide as a recognition of classic British cars. Get your car out and drive it! \nThis special extended awareness week is a calling for all British car owners to get their machines out of the garage and onto the roads and byways throughout their little corner of the world\, and give these timely classics of the past the exposure they deserve. While not only heightening the awareness of these somewhat forgotten vehicles of the past\, they will help assure their preservation for many years to come for future enthusiasts to cherish.

SUMMARY:Rallye to Reno
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Charlie Adams \nBill Marshall kept us informed about the progress of the Rallye to Reno as it evolved on its first day\, which was Saturday\, June 4. (This cross-country drive was held in conjunction with the MG2011 all-Register MG convention in Reno\, Nev.) \nMore than 30 cars were at the start in Ocean City\, Md.\, (the beginning of Route 50 on the east coast)\, with a 9 a.m. get away. Bill reported that the drive from Ocean City was uneventful\, although driving through Washington\, D.C. was made difficult due to the traffic and heat. \nWe timed our arrival at the our rendezvous point in Chantilly so that we had only a half-hour wait until the rallye cars began to appear on the horizon. Bill and Kathy Wemhoff\, Butch and Judy Smith\, John Padget\, Keith Kallipos\, and Alana and I formed our welcoming group in Chantilly. \nBill and Karen arrived at our Chantilly rendezvous about 1:30 pm in very good spirits\, followed shortly by Carl and Jean Josefson. We saw most of the cars on the rallye from this point\, and 15 or more stopped for a few minutes. Bruce Woodson\, and his son Brian were among the first to pass our rendezvous point. Bill and Karen Marshall and Carl and Jean Josefson\, from our chapter\, stopped to join us. In addition\, we greeted Charlie Baldwin\, in his black 1962 Austin-Healey 3000\, Phil and Arty Williams\, in their green 1949 MG TC\, and Constantine and Maryann Polidoroff\, in their red 1952 MG TD\, among others. \nButch and Judy Smith and Alana and I continued with the rallye cars on to Winchester. Keith Kallapos made it as far as Aldie\, Va.\, where his wife\, Kathy\, spends her days at an antique shop named “Diamonds and Rust.” Kathy set up a welcome and refreshment stop for the rallye and many of the cars stopped there along the way. \nNext we stopped in Upperville\, Va.\, at Paul Warren’s British and Classic Car Doctor shop. It’s quite busy there\, with lots of interesting cars. Chris Kintner was there at the time we visited\, and Carl and Jean had the fan belt of their car tightened by three mechanics. I learned that Paul Warren had completed work on the Josefson’s MGA at 6 p.m. the previous night. Among other things\, Paul installed a 5-speed\, an alternator and an electric radiator fan. \nAfter arriving at the Winchester hotel where the rallye participants were staying\, we all went downtown and parked our cars on the walking mall. We attended a reception graciously hosted by Moss Motors\, and later had dinner in a British pub. This was a very happy moment for all who made the drive. Later\, Butch and Judy and Alana and I spent the night at Martha Ludtke’s home and enjoyed her fine hospitality.

SUMMARY:Drive Your MGA Day
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Alana Adams \nDrive Your MG Day\, was a perfect spring morning with temperature and sun ideal for a top-down ride through the countryside. Ten members of our NAMGAR-Mid Atlantic Chapter assembled about mid-morning at Carderock Park in Maryland. Larry Newman appreciated the start on the Maryland side of the Potomac\, since he and Diana had only a 10-minute commute to that starting point. Traveling from the Virginia side of the beltway were Jim Makin and his daughter Ally\, a student at Radford University\, Butch and Judy Smith\, Bill and Karen Marshall and Charlie and Alana Adams. \nThe caravan of vintage MGs snaked along miles of winding country roads\, beneath lush leafy canopies that stood as great sentinels along the road sides. The group explored beautiful neighborhoods in Potomac\, Md.\, replete with storybook mansions surrounded by wrought iron fences. Stately neighborhoods were juxtaposed to bucolic country properties with horses grazing in fields of bright yellow blooming buttercups. Competing traffic was hard to find on this drive\, although we did encounter more than a few bicycle riders pedaling along the narrow roads\, which required careful maneuvering as we passed them. \nWe arrived in Poolesville well before noon and parked our cars behind Bassett’s Restaurant. We dined outside on a covered patio surrounded with hanging baskets of flowers. The most popular item on the luncheon menu by far was the tuna melt\, which was the big winner among our group. The waitress was attentive and accommodating and all agreed we had excellent food and service. \nAfter a satisfying meal\, we assembled the cars for a group photo in front of the classic-looking Poolesville Bank. The Virginians then said adieu to the Marylanders as we revved our motors and departed Poolesville. Charlie\, however\, had one last surprise gem to end the day’s outing. The group had to cross the Potomac to enter Leesburg\, Va.\, and we went in style boarding the historic White’s Ferry which took us leisurely across the river. Our ride was a picture-perfect end to the day.

SUMMARY:Britain on the Green
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Charlie Adams \nOn the first Sunday of May\, the Capital Triumph Register held its annual car show at Collingwood along the Potomac River near Alexandria\, Va. This is a lovely garden setting on the grounds of an elegant colonial mansion\, a good spot for a car show. The light gray sky made for a pleasant day and undercut the forecast of rain. The weather cooperated provided no more than a short and very light spritzing of the field. \nThe turnout was healthy\, with many more cars appearing than the 118 that had been pre-registered. \nMore than 25 MGs were at the show\, including a strong group of MG TDs and TFs. The MGs included a lovely 1933 tan MG J2 which held a sign saying “the best thing about this MG is that it runs.” \nAs for MGAs\, three appeared\, including the 1962 MKII MGAs of Liz Ten Eyck (who received the first place award) and myself (second place award)\, along with Dick Farwell with his daughter Kathryn in their beautiful black and tan 1961 1600. Dick told me that he is planning to retire to his lake home near Buffalo\, N.Y.\, and pass his MGA to his daughter Kathryn\, who is a senior at Virginia Tech. \nOf particular interest to me was the 1964 Turner MKIII\, the first Turner I have seen. Turners were produced in Wolverhampton England by Jack Turner from 1949 to 1965. Of the 670 cars produced by Mr. Turner\, 317 are known to have survived. His cars were known for good competition performance. In addition to the Turner\, this show included a rare 1958 Lister-Jaguar “Knobbly” in completely restored form; a delight to see. An example of this car can be seen at Canepa Designs.

SUMMARY:Chili Party & Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nWe would like to thank Steve and Nancy Woodall for hosting our Annual Meeting and Chili Party at their home on Saturday\, April 2. We were once again treated to the use of their Carriage House and plenty of Steve’s cars to ogle during Happy Hour with dinner served on the upper level. It just doesn’t get any better than this! . \nWe experienced a strong attendance with many members vying for the title of Best Chili in the Mid-Atlantic honor. We also held our traditional Kitchen Box Challenge provided by last year’s champion Jean Josefson\, as well as our Parts Box Challenge assembled this year by Keith Kallapos. . \nI would also like to thank Butch Smith for acquiring the prizes for the Best Chili and Parts Box Challenge winners and runners-up. The Chapter also extends a hearty thank you to Cecelia Bruce of Scarborough Faire for donating a gift certificate as a prize. \nThe winner of the Best Chili honor was Shelia Stern whose recipe relegated perennial winner Butch Smith to a runner-up position this year. Third place was taken by a surprised (to me) Bill Marshall. We had a number of offerings in a tie for 4th Place including defending champion Bruce Zivic. . \nHere is a hint for next year’s contestants: The more mild recipes seemed to be gaining favor over the fire-breathing concoctions! \nThe Kitchen Box Challenge was won by Judy Smith\, closely followed by Lisa Eaton and Shelia Stern. Our new formula of having the previous winner prepare the Box for the current year seems to allow for a year-long opportunity to find obscure kitchen gadgets known only to gourmets. Many items selected by Jean baffled the ladies but all of them did seem to correctly identify the various styles of wine-cork removers. I wonder what that means? \nKeith did a wonderful job providing parts for the Parts Box Challenge but alas\, no one substituted the worn parts taken from Kelsey’s project car with shiny new or reconditioned parts. Jim Mackin identified the most parts with Michael Eaton and Butch Smith just a few parts behind. \nWe once again thank the Woodalls for their generosity in having the Chapter over for this event. \n \nThe Chili Party also serves as an opportunity to host our Annual Meeting. Martha Ludtke provided a recap of last year’s Annual Meeting along with a treasurer’s report based on the numbers when she turned over the position to Judy Smith. Judy then provided a recap of the spending for the past year along with the announcement that with Butch and her pending relocation to Mathews\, she would be stepping down from that position. \nThis provided a nice segue to our nominations and election of our Executive Committee for the upcoming year. By voice vote\, Bill Marshall and Liz Ten Eyck were again confirmed as chairman and vice chairman\, Keith Kallapos returns as our technical adviser\, Alana Adams was approved as our new secretary/treasurer and Kathy Kallapos will serve as our new at-large member. \nThe Chapter continues to be supported by an active membership with a broad range of activities scheduled throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Middleburg Christmas Parade
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nWe joined with our friends of the MG Car Club on December 4th to participate in the annual Middleburg Christmas Parade. Unlike last year’s shortened event in a sloppy snow\, this year’s was held under sunny skies with a brisk chill in the air – capturing the flavor of the season in Virginia Hunt Country. \nWith Charlie and Alana’s MGA still down for head repairs\, they generously volunteered to drive my MGB GT in the parade\, giving it some much needed miles as it has been rather neglected this year. Charlie picked up it Friday to take it to their home for a bit of polishing and in pure MG fashion\, the battery went dead overnight and would not start Saturday morning without some added juice provided by jumper cables. \nOnce on the road they met Karen and me in Manassas and we were off to Middleburg to meet with the 11 other MGs gathered for the event. Joining us there were Bob and Jane Schoeplein in Jane’s MGB and Jim Mackin\, filling out the roster of MGAs at two. As we parked at our designated staging area at the American Legion Hall\, we advised Charlie to park in a downhill direction in case a push-start was required. We then began the task of decorating the cars in the holiday spirit and waited for our slot to be called as we socialized in the parking lot. \nAnd yes\, as we were called to line up\, Charlie signaled for a push – a task that would be repeated throughout the remainder of the day. \nIt is unfortunate we don’t get to actually see the parade as it seems the whole town turned out for the event. Spectators filled both sides of the four blocks of the parade route and this year we got as many compliments on our funky Santa hats as we did the MGA. We also discovered our group followed a group of horses as their path was … ah …“documented” throughout the parade route. \nAfter the parade was over we returned to Middleburg by circumnavigating the back roads of the outskirts of town as the main roads continued to be closed to traffic. Once finding our way back to the American Legion Hall for parking\, we joined the MGCC members for lunch at Julien’s Café and Restaurant where the club organizers Jim and Jane Byers had made reservations. This is a delightful way to spend a December Saturday morning and I encourage all to mark their calendars for December 3\, 2011.

SUMMARY:Hunt Country Classic
DESCRIPTION:The weather was splendid for the 15th Annual Hunt Country Classic British Car Show held October 10th at Willoughby Farm in Marshall\, Va. The cool fall nip in the morning air gave way to pleasant temperatures in the 70s as we reached the show field and began to stage our cars. We did manage to sneak in a small caravan to the show with Bill Marshall leading the MGAs of Charlie Adams and Ken Lawrence. Of course\, with the small group we didn’t miss any turns\, unlike last year when our rather large group required numerous U-turns to find our way. \nAlready at the field were Liz Ten Eyck and Kelsey Kallapos for their early morning shifts as volunteer parking coordinators. Joint Mid-Atlantic and MGCC members Chris & Cheryl Kintner\, Ruth Arnold and Doug & Kay Campbell were also serving in their roles for the MGCC that help make this show such as success each year. \nWhile we have long-claimed Hunt Country as our “home” car show of the season\, this year this was indeed the case as all MGAs on the show field were members of our Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Joining the line up of Liz\, Bill\, Chris\, Charlie and Ken were Butch Smith\, Larry Newman\, Jack & Shelia Stern\, and a fashionably late Bruce & Jane Zivic in their Twin Cam. Showing in other classes were Bill & Kathy Wemhoff with their TR6\, Kelsey with her MGB\, Ruthie with her MGB GT “Brigitte\,” Doug & Kay with their Magnette “Winston” and Bob Schoeplein with his freshly on-the-road MG TD “Waldo.” Tom Ford also came out for support\, but with recent ankle surgery\, unable to work all the pedals in his MGA. Michael & Lisa Eaton made the show a family event with Jonathan\, Robert and David enjoying the field of cars. \nWith the record number of MGAs at last years show\, our section of the show field was expanded in anticipation of another large group of cars. For unknown reasons\, the total car count for the show was down overall this year so our MGAs were a bit spread out to fill our “turf”. This put Chris\, Larry and Ken at a slight disadvantage as voters often made their choices before finding the other grouping of MGAs. Guaranteed a Mid-Atlantic Chapter sweep\, the results were Liz Ten Eyck awarded first place\, Butch Smith second – coming off his second place finish in the 1600 class at GT-35 and Bill Marshall gathering the third place award. Doug & Kay Campbell were awarded second place with Winston in the Open Class – Sedan category. \nWhile the cars are in the spotlight for the day\, Hunt Country remains about the people. It is always a pleasure to spend time with our fellow Chapter members\, our friends showing other marques and chatting with spectators who come to visit and perhaps ponder if a vintage British car is in their future. Not surprising\, many who stopped to talk had owned an MGA at some point in their lives. Hunt Country is also about those that volunteered their time to work the various parking stations\, help set up the show field\, work the registration desk and regalia stand or any number of other activities that must blend to make the show successful for both participants and spectators. A “job well done” goes out to all those that volunteered their time to contribute to our British car hobby.

SUMMARY:Annual 'ool Party
DESCRIPTION:Our annual ‘Ool Party\, held at the home of Liz Ten Eyck\, was an opportunity to cool off by a dip in the pool\, drive your MGA\, enjoy some good food\, and socialize with club members. \nThe day was well attended by approximately 25 members and guests\, with some first-time attendees such as John Padgett\, Matt Kutz\, and Jack & Sheila Stern getting to see the pool without any “P” for the first time. Matt’s MGA is still “under restoration” so he arrived in his beautiful Triumph TR-3. \nThe day started with a drive through the back roads of Great Falls while admiring mega mansions\, quaint homes\, landscaping and natural areas along the way. We even got to enjoy the local wildlife by spotting a fox and deer during the drive. \nBack poolside\, attendees were supplied with appetizers to nibble on and the coolers were well stocked with appropriate beverages to quench our thirsts. Courtesy of our Chapter members\, lunch included a host of delectable goodies and Liz’s first attempt at cooking pork ribs and smoking a beef brisket. There may even have been a few barbecue-stained T shirts in the crowd. The assortment of desserts were delicious\, particularly the chocolate éclairs made for the party by Keith Kallapos’s son. . \nCharlie & Alana Adams displayed their determination by showing up even after they had to have their MGA\, whose Pertronix died on their way to the party\, towed home. Carl & Jean Josefson also made a heroic effort to attend in their MGA as they first journeyed to Upperville to retrieve their A from the repair shop. \nAll in all we had a good turnout of cars and members. It must have been a sane and successful day since no one was thrown in the pool.

SUMMARY:Middleburg Christmas Parade
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nOur driving activity for the month of December was planned to take advantage of the MG Car Club’s participation in the Middleburg Christmas Parade on Saturday\, December 5th. \nThe MGCC has participated in this parade for a number of years and many of us have attended to showoff our MGAs to the crowd of spectators the parade attracts. \nThis year things were moving along just fine with 14 MGs signed up to take part in the Parade. As always MGCC hosting members Jim & Jane Byers made reservations at the Coach Stop restaurant for the group to relax after the completion of the event and to enjoy lunch with our fellow MG enthusiasts. \nJim added a little something special this year to bring forth a bit of that Christmas spirit with the addition of snow! Our plans had been to drive the MGA making the MGB GT available for Charlie and Alana Adams to use as his newly acquired MGA (yes – a second one) still needed a once over before hitting the road. The snow caused many to leave their cars safely in their garages and led us to scrap our plans to drive the MGA. Charlie and Alana were not eager to venture out in a borrowed MG in the snow so Karen and I decided the now-available B would be warm and dry changed plans once again. \nUndaunted by the snow and being assured by Jim the parade would continue despite the weather\, we loaded the MGB GT with our “display” packages and headed off to Middleburg to join the die-hards we knew would be there. \nOnce at the American Legion Hall staging area we were greeted by Jim and Jane and we quickly determined the two cars would be the sole representatives of the MGCC for this year and that the parade would move forward rather quickly as many of the marching bands and other participants made the choice to look forward to 2010. As our turn in line came\, Jim and I decided to use an in-line formation that would “stretch out” the cars rather than the traditional side-by-side formation typically used. Despite the weather there were many spectators lining the streets and we made our way down Washington Street to the cheers of admiration of the cars\, bright flashbulbs and of course the calls of “I had one just like that in ….” \nWith the parade moving quickly we finished well before our 1 pm lunch reservation\, and after some consideration decided heading home before the snow got deeper was the wise choice to make. \nThe Middleburg Christmas Parade is an enjoyable event and we encourage all to mark the calendars for December 4\, 2010 and make plans to join us – with snow tires being optional!

SUMMARY:October Pub Social
DESCRIPTION:Our first Pub Social of the season was held Sunday\, October 25th at the home of members Charlie and Alana Adams. \nRed was the predominate color of the day as the MGAs driven by John Padgett\, Steve & Nancy Woodall\, Carl & Jean Josefson and the MGB GT of Bill & Karen Marshall were all some shade of red. The lone MG holdout was the BRG MGA of Keith & Kathy Kallapos. \nButch & Judy Smith did not bring their A as it is in the paint shop preparing for new paint\, but it does now sport a new red top with zip-out rear window. Butch has “long desired” a red MGA\, as it is such a rare MGA color and this new top goes part way to achieving that goal. \nOur first order of business was to poke around Charlie’s project MGA and offer our words of wisdom on how to approach restoration or alternately attempt to steal this very solid Mark II out from under his feet. Larry Newman was able to show us pictures of his current project nearing completion which only seemed to whet Charlie’s desire to have one in running condition. But hey\, what are friends for if not to encourage others to spend their money piling more MGAs into their available garage space! \nBill & Kathy Wemhoff provided some early insight on their forthcoming Drive to Lunch as our pizza delivery arrived. Each Drive organized by Bill & Kathy is spectacular and we expect this one to live up to our expectations. Arriving in time for lunch were Ken & Joyce Lawrence. Their tardiness was excused by their need to attend Joyce’s mother’s 95th birthday party earlier in the day. \n \nAs Kelsey Kallapos continues to make progress on her MGA restoration project\, Chapter members continue to support her with spare parts and useful bits. The latest to earn a YES tee shirt were John Padgett and Ken Lawrence for their contributions to Kelsey’s project. YES stands for Young Enthusiast Sponsor with a tag line of “shifting the joy of British motoring to the next generation.” Kelsey has presented a tee shirt to each Chapter member who has contributed parts or labor towards getting her MGA on the road with her goal of driving this MGA to high school in her senior year. Kelsey informs us she has plenty of tee shirts left and would like to see each Chapter member sporting one of these dashing fashion statements! \nPizza consumed\, tires kicked\, tee shirts awarded and hosts reeled deeper into the MGA world\, it was time to thank Charlie and Alana for their hospitality in opening their home for our members to gather and socialize. \nWe will hold our next Pub Social in early to mid February time frame and are seeking a Chapter member to host this event.

SUMMARY:Hunt Country Classic
DESCRIPTION:The MG Car Club held their 14th annual classic British Car Show on Sunday\, October 11\, 2009. \nAs we have done the past few years\, we organized a small caravan to drive to the show. We started in Manassas as Charlie Adams was collecting a spare MGB GT to take to the show – getting an early taste of car show life while he begins the early stages of his MGA restoration project. Joining us were Keith & Kathy Kallapos and Jim Mackin – still learning that it can be cold at speeds without a jacket in the fall mornings! On the way we collected Ken & Joyce Lawrence along the roadside and we were on our merry way\, traveling Route 55 through Haymarket\, The Plains and into Marshall. \nOnce in the Marshall area\, there are only two turns to reach the show field and these intersections are always carefully marked by members of the MG Car Club. This year\, perhaps to provide an added opportunity to the local residents to view the cars\, the signs were not in place AT the intersections but on the shoulders of the road leading up to the intersection – and on the opposite side of the road that one would be looking. Oh well. This gave me an opportunity to test how well the caravan would follow an obviously lost leader. To shorten the story\, they followed well\, then missed the turn-around point due to traffic\, picked another British car to follow who led them wrong and … well\, we all finally made it to the show\, arriving as two groups! \nThis year there were 21 MGAs on display in the MGA parking area\, plus Bob and Jane Schoeplein showing in the race car class and Liz Ten Eyck showing in the Prince of Wales category reserved for the class winners of last year’s event. In addition to those members of the “Lost Squadron\,” Chapter members Bill & Kathy Wemhoff\, Tom Ford\, Bruce Zivic\, John & Kelly Burns all had their MGAs on display. Showing in the MGB GT class were members Charlie Adams in the borrowed GT and Ruth Arnold showing her 1974 MGB GT\, Bridget. We later welcomed a late arriving Warren Arthur with his MGA\, John Padgett\, who helped park show cars\, and past Chapter Chairman Amy Rothberg\, who is now MGA-less but still active in the Chapter. \nThe quality of the cars on the show field is just spectacular. Each year the quality of the new restorations just continues to improve and the attention to detail of the older restorations also continues to improve. The winners in the MGA class this year were Paul Hanley with his 1959 Twin Cam\, Chris & Cheryl Kintner with their 1957 1500 roadster and Bob Samuelson with his 1960 1600 roadster. \nI would like to thank all of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter members who volunteered their time to the MG Car Club to assist with parking duties. It takes a great number of people to host a car show of this size and the MG Car Club always does a wonderful job making sure the event runs smoothly. \nThe MG Car Club has posted the winners of all the classes on their web site as well as photographs of many of the cars entered in the show. SUMMARY:NAMGAR Regional GT in the Poconos
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nOur MG Adventures for 2009 continued with a number of Mid-Atlantic Chapter members attending the NAMGAR Regional GT in Pocono Manor\, Pennsylvania. \nOur caravan of one departed Manassas early September 23rd\, with plans to meet Keith & Kathy Kallapos at the Stone House in the Manassas Battlefield Park and then travel to Leesburg to meet with Liz Ten Eyck and her travel guest Linda Quinn. Larry and Diana Newman were called out of town by a family emergency and were not able to join us\, as planned. \nWhile the weather forecast for the day was scattered showers all along our travel route\, we started with the top down and fortunately enjoyed a beautiful sunny day for the entire 250 miles enroute to Pocono Manor. Keith and Kathy were not so lucky\, as at the moment their only top is their fiberglass hardtop and they were forced to travel without the benefits of open air motoring. \nOur plans called for a leisurely day avoiding the Interstates and staying on the smaller roads\, taking us through many quaint Pennsylvania towns. We stopped for lunch at a place\, recommended by a local street construction crew\, called Denny’s Lennies Casual Dining. The theme of casual dining was correct as the pace was relaxed and the food was excellent – apparently all the ingredients being freshly selected at the local Farmer’s Market\, and then only selected by the staff as each order was placed – and we’re still not sure if the Market was all that local or even located in Pennsylvania! \nMindful of the time spent casually waiting for lunch; we picked up the pace in an effort to reach the Inn at Pocono Manor before registration closed and in time to settle into our hotel rooms prior to the scheduled Welcoming Reception held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday evening. \nRegional GT events provide an opportunity for NAMGAR members to Get Together at events that by design are smaller than a national GT. Regionals can mimic the format of a GT or take on any aspect regarding activities the host Chapter desires. As with any GT\, the goal is to have fun while driving an MGA and making new or rekindling old friendships with fellow MGA enthusiasts. \nWith seventeen cars registered and 33 guests attending\, the event was by all accounts a great success. NAMGAR members from five states and Canada\, representing six NAMGAR Chapters\, journeyed to experience the NAMGAR adage\, “It’s the cars that get you there\, but it’s the people that bring you back.” \nWith the Regional sponsored by the British Car Club of Northeast Pennsylvania\, the scheduled activity for Thursday was a drive to Grey Towers\, a National Historic Site operated by the U.S. Forest Service. Grey Towers was built in 1886 by James and Mary Pinchot as their summer retreat. It was later the home of their son Gifford Pinchot\, an early conservationist who was influential in establishing and served as the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. Gifford was also twice elected Governor of Pennsylvania and was instrumental in preserving many natural sites as state parks. Led by our Regional hosts and fellow Key West alumni Bill and Carol Shamonsky\, much of our route was through the Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area with its scenic beauty. Our 50-mile drive to Grey Towers took us over roads seemingly designed for MGAs in perfect fall weather\, with only a light jacket necessary to fend off the chill of the Pennsylvania mountains. From the front terrace of Grey Towers\, views of New York and New Jersey were visible off in the distance. \nThursday evening our group gathered for a Western-themed barbecue held at the Inn. While thetenderfoots of the Northeast could not quite agree on what constituted ‘western’ dress\, the food was delicious\, spirits flowed freely from the bar and a rowdy game of Texas Hold-‘Em brokeat one of the tables. Large sums of nickels and dimes transferred around the table with each shuffle of the deck\, but no MGA titles were seen exchanging hands. \nAt another table\, your fellow Mid-Atlantic members discussed the possibility of hosting a Regional GT of our own – with the Maryland Eastern Shore and its historical and natural points of interests being incorporated into the theme of the event. Stay tuned for more details as we continue to explore this possibility as a Chapter event. \nWith many activities available at the Inn at Pocono Manor resort\, Friday was designed as a free day to allow us to take advantage of their many offerings. Favored activities included roundgolf\, horseback riding on the trails of the Inn\, enjoying spa treatments and kayaking on the Delaware River. Others took advantage of the short drives to visit the local coalmine museum\, the picturesque village of Jim Thorpe\, go antiquing or attend the hot rod show being held at nearby Pocono Raceway. \nWith Liz and Linda bowing out of riding the trails on horseback\, this left Bill & Karen and Keith & Kathy\, along with other fellow MGers\, to tame the wild broncos of Pocono. While the horseshad rather tame given names such as Jill\, Measles\, Ranger and Coffee\, we preferred to imagine we were riding Thunder\, Lightning\, Tornado and Bullet as we made our way along the narrow mountainous trails and splashed through the raging white-water rivekeeping an eye out for mountain lions\, bears and other threats to our survival – returning intact and only slightly worse for the wear two hours later. \nWith a quick break for lunch\, we joined Liz and Linda on their planned kayak trip down a section of the Delaware River. We were privileged to have Pocono Manor resident and BCCNEPA member Russ Cramer as our guide during our kayak adventure. We nicknamed Russ the ‘Mayor’ of Pocono Manor due to his endless knowledge of all things local and his ability to obtain quick reservations for large groups of people. Russ is an avid kayaker and led our group on a two-hotrip down to the Delaware Water Gap – pointing out many of the historical areas and natural interests as we traveled the light rapids – landing on the shores of New Jersey\, allowing us to add another state to our MGA travels this year. \nSaturday dawned with cloudy skies as we prepared for the car show held on the grounds of the InOur cars were joined by a number of BCCNEPA club members who came for the day to display their British cars for the enjoyment of the resort’s guests. Although cloudy and cool – okay\, it was cold – it remained dry for the duration of the show\, allowing us time to inspect and admire each of the vehicles on display. \nAt the Awards Dinner and Farewell Banquet held Saturday evening\, awards were presented for overall Best of Show\, first through third in the MGA class\, first through third in the Other British ckass\, Long Distance and a special\, unannounced Spirit Award – properly given to Russ Cramer. \nBest of Show was awarded to Liz for her 1962 MGA Mark II roadster. First Place in the MGA class was awarded to Mike and Cathy Finch of Ontario for their 1959 1500 roadster\, Second to Jerry and Barbara Andres of Richmond\, Virginia for their 1956 1500 roadster and Third to Micky and Linda Walka of New Jersey for their 1961 1600 roadster. Other British class winners were\, in order\, Nancy Ware for her 1954 MG TF\, Ken Cooney for his 1954 Jaguar XK 120 and Al Borders for his 1967 Triumph TR4. All are members of BCCNEPA. The Long Distance Award was presented to Mark and Cindy Michalak of the Michigan Rowdies for their 652-mile trip to attend the event. \nWhat begins as a long week when looking forward always seems to be too short when it is time say our good-byes and start the return trip home. Bill and Carol Shamonsky\, along with all the members of the BCCNEPA Chapter who contributed the many hours necessary to make the evesuch a success\, are to be congratulated for their hard work\, efforts and attention to detail. The event was run in a flawless manner from the picking up of the registration packet Wednesday afternoon to grabbing that final cup of coffee as we headed home Sunday morning. \nThe rain had finally arrived by late Saturday afternoon and was expected to stay with us all day Sunday. With this in mind we decided to cut a few hours off the return trip home by taking the Interstates back to the Harrisburg area\, where we picked up Route 15 towards Gettysburg. We had made arrangements in advance to stop at the home of Mike and Pat Caltriders\, in Littlestown\, PA – just outside of Gettysburg. \nMike and Pat were early members of NAMGAR and of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Mike’s MGwas the tenth car to be registered with NAMGAR and was also the first 1500 class member to claim pewter at GT-1 in Harpers Ferry in 1976. Mike has an outstanding collection of MGA models and memorabilia and was kind enough to show his collection to us. By the time we left the Caltrider’s the rain had begun to taper off and we made the remaining 100 miles home without event.

SUMMARY:Hunt Country Classic
DESCRIPTION:The MG Car Club Washington D.C. Centre hosted its 13th annual British car show on Sunday\, October 12th. This has long been considered our “home” car show of the season with most of the MGAs on display being members of our Mid-Atlantic Chapter. This year was a bit of an exception with 17 MGAs making the field\, the largest turnout of MGAs in memory. \nWe took advantage of the drive to the show by forming a small caravan leaving Manassas with Bill Marshall leading the MGAs of Ken & Joyce Lawrence and Keith Kallopos with John Padgett riding shotgun\, on a scenic route to the show. This route took us through Haymarket\, The Plains and Marshall on our way to Willoughby Farm. Once there\, we were joined by fellow Chapter members Tom Ford showing in the MGA class\, Bob Schoeplein in the Race Car class and Bruce Zivic\, his twin-cam undergoing an engine rebuild\, and Ruth Arnold showing in their respective MGB classes. Doug and Kay Campbell were manning the Regalia tent for the MG Car Club and were unable to show their Magnette this year. \nOur very own Butch Smith was to display in the Prince of Wales division as last year’s top MGA\, but despite the proximity to Halloween\, Butch did not feel like a repeat winner this year with his grill out of the toothless car for new chrome plating. No sense of humor\, this guy. \nThird place went to Bob Samuelson of Maryland\, second to John Casey of Jeffersonton\, VA and … drum roll please … first place to our own Liz Ten Eyck. Bob Schoeplein captured second place in the race car class with his 1960 MGA “Honeybee.” \nAll in all this was a very good event and it was great to see so many new MGAs showing up at these shows. We hope we were able to entice a few to join both our Chapter and NAMGAR as well.
