SUMMARY:Chili Party & Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nWe would like to thank Steve and Nancy Woodall for hosting our Annual Meeting and Chili Party at their home on Saturday\, April 2. We were once again treated to the use of their Carriage House and plenty of Steve’s cars to ogle during Happy Hour with dinner served on the upper level. It just doesn’t get any better than this! . \nWe experienced a strong attendance with many members vying for the title of Best Chili in the Mid-Atlantic honor. We also held our traditional Kitchen Box Challenge provided by last year’s champion Jean Josefson\, as well as our Parts Box Challenge assembled this year by Keith Kallapos. . \nI would also like to thank Butch Smith for acquiring the prizes for the Best Chili and Parts Box Challenge winners and runners-up. The Chapter also extends a hearty thank you to Cecelia Bruce of Scarborough Faire for donating a gift certificate as a prize. \nThe winner of the Best Chili honor was Shelia Stern whose recipe relegated perennial winner Butch Smith to a runner-up position this year. Third place was taken by a surprised (to me) Bill Marshall. We had a number of offerings in a tie for 4th Place including defending champion Bruce Zivic. . \nHere is a hint for next year’s contestants: The more mild recipes seemed to be gaining favor over the fire-breathing concoctions! \nThe Kitchen Box Challenge was won by Judy Smith\, closely followed by Lisa Eaton and Shelia Stern. Our new formula of having the previous winner prepare the Box for the current year seems to allow for a year-long opportunity to find obscure kitchen gadgets known only to gourmets. Many items selected by Jean baffled the ladies but all of them did seem to correctly identify the various styles of wine-cork removers. I wonder what that means? \nKeith did a wonderful job providing parts for the Parts Box Challenge but alas\, no one substituted the worn parts taken from Kelsey’s project car with shiny new or reconditioned parts. Jim Mackin identified the most parts with Michael Eaton and Butch Smith just a few parts behind. \nWe once again thank the Woodalls for their generosity in having the Chapter over for this event. \n \nThe Chili Party also serves as an opportunity to host our Annual Meeting. Martha Ludtke provided a recap of last year’s Annual Meeting along with a treasurer’s report based on the numbers when she turned over the position to Judy Smith. Judy then provided a recap of the spending for the past year along with the announcement that with Butch and her pending relocation to Mathews\, she would be stepping down from that position. \nThis provided a nice segue to our nominations and election of our Executive Committee for the upcoming year. By voice vote\, Bill Marshall and Liz Ten Eyck were again confirmed as chairman and vice chairman\, Keith Kallapos returns as our technical adviser\, Alana Adams was approved as our new secretary/treasurer and Kathy Kallapos will serve as our new at-large member. \nThe Chapter continues to be supported by an active membership with a broad range of activities scheduled throughout the year.

SUMMARY:Middleburg Christmas Parade
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nWe joined with our friends of the MG Car Club on December 4th to participate in the annual Middleburg Christmas Parade. Unlike last year’s shortened event in a sloppy snow\, this year’s was held under sunny skies with a brisk chill in the air – capturing the flavor of the season in Virginia Hunt Country. \nWith Charlie and Alana’s MGA still down for head repairs\, they generously volunteered to drive my MGB GT in the parade\, giving it some much needed miles as it has been rather neglected this year. Charlie picked up it Friday to take it to their home for a bit of polishing and in pure MG fashion\, the battery went dead overnight and would not start Saturday morning without some added juice provided by jumper cables. \nOnce on the road they met Karen and me in Manassas and we were off to Middleburg to meet with the 11 other MGs gathered for the event. Joining us there were Bob and Jane Schoeplein in Jane’s MGB and Jim Mackin\, filling out the roster of MGAs at two. As we parked at our designated staging area at the American Legion Hall\, we advised Charlie to park in a downhill direction in case a push-start was required. We then began the task of decorating the cars in the holiday spirit and waited for our slot to be called as we socialized in the parking lot. \nAnd yes\, as we were called to line up\, Charlie signaled for a push – a task that would be repeated throughout the remainder of the day. \nIt is unfortunate we don’t get to actually see the parade as it seems the whole town turned out for the event. Spectators filled both sides of the four blocks of the parade route and this year we got as many compliments on our funky Santa hats as we did the MGA. We also discovered our group followed a group of horses as their path was … ah …“documented” throughout the parade route. \nAfter the parade was over we returned to Middleburg by circumnavigating the back roads of the outskirts of town as the main roads continued to be closed to traffic. Once finding our way back to the American Legion Hall for parking\, we joined the MGCC members for lunch at Julien’s Café and Restaurant where the club organizers Jim and Jane Byers had made reservations. This is a delightful way to spend a December Saturday morning and I encourage all to mark their calendars for December 3\, 2011.

SUMMARY:Annual 'ool Party
DESCRIPTION:Our annual ‘Ool Party\, held at the home of Liz Ten Eyck\, was an opportunity to cool off by a dip in the pool\, drive your MGA\, enjoy some good food\, and socialize with club members. \nThe day was well attended by approximately 25 members and guests\, with some first-time attendees such as John Padgett\, Matt Kutz\, and Jack & Sheila Stern getting to see the pool without any “P” for the first time. Matt’s MGA is still “under restoration” so he arrived in his beautiful Triumph TR-3. \nThe day started with a drive through the back roads of Great Falls while admiring mega mansions\, quaint homes\, landscaping and natural areas along the way. We even got to enjoy the local wildlife by spotting a fox and deer during the drive. \nBack poolside\, attendees were supplied with appetizers to nibble on and the coolers were well stocked with appropriate beverages to quench our thirsts. Courtesy of our Chapter members\, lunch included a host of delectable goodies and Liz’s first attempt at cooking pork ribs and smoking a beef brisket. There may even have been a few barbecue-stained T shirts in the crowd. The assortment of desserts were delicious\, particularly the chocolate éclairs made for the party by Keith Kallapos’s son. . \nCharlie & Alana Adams displayed their determination by showing up even after they had to have their MGA\, whose Pertronix died on their way to the party\, towed home. Carl & Jean Josefson also made a heroic effort to attend in their MGA as they first journeyed to Upperville to retrieve their A from the repair shop. \nAll in all we had a good turnout of cars and members. It must have been a sane and successful day since no one was thrown in the pool.

SUMMARY:Middleburg Christmas Parade
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Bill Marshall \nOur driving activity for the month of December was planned to take advantage of the MG Car Club’s participation in the Middleburg Christmas Parade on Saturday\, December 5th. \nThe MGCC has participated in this parade for a number of years and many of us have attended to showoff our MGAs to the crowd of spectators the parade attracts. \nThis year things were moving along just fine with 14 MGs signed up to take part in the Parade. As always MGCC hosting members Jim & Jane Byers made reservations at the Coach Stop restaurant for the group to relax after the completion of the event and to enjoy lunch with our fellow MG enthusiasts. \nJim added a little something special this year to bring forth a bit of that Christmas spirit with the addition of snow! Our plans had been to drive the MGA making the MGB GT available for Charlie and Alana Adams to use as his newly acquired MGA (yes – a second one) still needed a once over before hitting the road. The snow caused many to leave their cars safely in their garages and led us to scrap our plans to drive the MGA. Charlie and Alana were not eager to venture out in a borrowed MG in the snow so Karen and I decided the now-available B would be warm and dry changed plans once again. \nUndaunted by the snow and being assured by Jim the parade would continue despite the weather\, we loaded the MGB GT with our “display” packages and headed off to Middleburg to join the die-hards we knew would be there. \nOnce at the American Legion Hall staging area we were greeted by Jim and Jane and we quickly determined the two cars would be the sole representatives of the MGCC for this year and that the parade would move forward rather quickly as many of the marching bands and other participants made the choice to look forward to 2010. As our turn in line came\, Jim and I decided to use an in-line formation that would “stretch out” the cars rather than the traditional side-by-side formation typically used. Despite the weather there were many spectators lining the streets and we made our way down Washington Street to the cheers of admiration of the cars\, bright flashbulbs and of course the calls of “I had one just like that in ….” \nWith the parade moving quickly we finished well before our 1 pm lunch reservation\, and after some consideration decided heading home before the snow got deeper was the wise choice to make. \nThe Middleburg Christmas Parade is an enjoyable event and we encourage all to mark the calendars for December 4\, 2010 and make plans to join us – with snow tires being optional!

SUMMARY:October Pub Social
DESCRIPTION:Our first Pub Social of the season was held Sunday\, October 25th at the home of members Charlie and Alana Adams. \nRed was the predominate color of the day as the MGAs driven by John Padgett\, Steve & Nancy Woodall\, Carl & Jean Josefson and the MGB GT of Bill & Karen Marshall were all some shade of red. The lone MG holdout was the BRG MGA of Keith & Kathy Kallapos. \nButch & Judy Smith did not bring their A as it is in the paint shop preparing for new paint\, but it does now sport a new red top with zip-out rear window. Butch has “long desired” a red MGA\, as it is such a rare MGA color and this new top goes part way to achieving that goal. \nOur first order of business was to poke around Charlie’s project MGA and offer our words of wisdom on how to approach restoration or alternately attempt to steal this very solid Mark II out from under his feet. Larry Newman was able to show us pictures of his current project nearing completion which only seemed to whet Charlie’s desire to have one in running condition. But hey\, what are friends for if not to encourage others to spend their money piling more MGAs into their available garage space! \nBill & Kathy Wemhoff provided some early insight on their forthcoming Drive to Lunch as our pizza delivery arrived. Each Drive organized by Bill & Kathy is spectacular and we expect this one to live up to our expectations. Arriving in time for lunch were Ken & Joyce Lawrence. Their tardiness was excused by their need to attend Joyce’s mother’s 95th birthday party earlier in the day. \n \nAs Kelsey Kallapos continues to make progress on her MGA restoration project\, Chapter members continue to support her with spare parts and useful bits. The latest to earn a YES tee shirt were John Padgett and Ken Lawrence for their contributions to Kelsey’s project. YES stands for Young Enthusiast Sponsor with a tag line of “shifting the joy of British motoring to the next generation.” Kelsey has presented a tee shirt to each Chapter member who has contributed parts or labor towards getting her MGA on the road with her goal of driving this MGA to high school in her senior year. Kelsey informs us she has plenty of tee shirts left and would like to see each Chapter member sporting one of these dashing fashion statements! \nPizza consumed\, tires kicked\, tee shirts awarded and hosts reeled deeper into the MGA world\, it was time to thank Charlie and Alana for their hospitality in opening their home for our members to gather and socialize. \nWe will hold our next Pub Social in early to mid February time frame and are seeking a Chapter member to host this event.
